The joy of discovery and the desire for fascination are the best prerequisites for Oldenburg’s annual ceramics event of the special kind: At the 37th renowned International Ceramics Fairs Oldenburg on 3 – 4 August 2019, 126 selected masters of the clay craft from all over Europe and overseas will be demonstrating the inexhaustible variety and extraordinary quality that contemporary ceramic art has to offer. In the open-air gallery of the ceramics market in front of Oldenburg Castle, ceramics enthusiasts can find true treasures of clay and porcelain: the finest one-of-a-kind objects and vessels, the beautiful and the unusual for use, design as well as individual pieces for house and garden. A broad program with special exhibitions, demonstration workshops and the awarding of specialist prizes accompany the outstandingly staffed and internationally highly regarded ceramics market. Every year, more than 60,000 visitors from near and far come to this important platform for international ceramic art – the only one of its kind in northern Germany.
Ceramic Market around Oldenburg Castle
The heart and centre of the event is the ceramic market around Oldenburg Castle, which is transformed for two days into a place of enjoyment and experience of the highest quality applied art. Selected by an expert jury from 360 applications, around 120 ceramists, designers and ceramic studios from all over Germany and 12 countries will present their works. The Ceramic Days are not only a meeting place for a lot of outstanding ceramic artists – the international ceramic scene, collectors, museum people and ceramic specialists also meet here.
Other highlights of the Ceramic Days: the special exhibitions in the baroque ambience of Oldenburg Castle offer insights into the contemporary movements of contemporary ceramics. The “brandnew– brandneu“ exhibitions featuring the latest works by market participants and the solo exhibition by ceramist Si-Sook Kang can be viewed on their own or in guided tours by experts.
This year, one day before the market opens on Friday, 2 August 2019, the Ceramist’s Portrait presentation workshop – the launch event of the Ceramic Fairs – offers the opportunity to experience the Kanadian Artist Susan Collett and Velimir Vukecivic from Serbia live and to gain insights into their working techniques and philosophies – including work demonstrations, talks and stories of their artistic development.
