Inhorgenta 2016 Scores Points with New Jewelry Design

Luxury long ago stopped being “in” at Inhorgenta, Germany’s watch and jewelry fair

Many people, especially in Asia and America, still see jewelry as an expression of luxury and status. But European jewelry-makers, including increasingly many women, have developed an entirely different understanding of jewelry in recent decades. Their unpretentious and sleekly simple creations use precious materials sparingly and intelligently. Along with authenticity of style, these designers tend to prioritize artisanal and technical know-how. As a specialized fair for this industry, Inhorgenta in Munich from February 12 to 15, 2016 is the world’s leading showcase for this new culture of jewelry. Although a few of the pioneers of “new jewelry”—e.g. Niessing, Carl Dau or Georg Spreng—disappeared from the fair during the past few years, Hall C2 continues to epitomize modern jewelry design. Will the hall’s new name—“Contemporary Design & Vision”—lead to a new mood of upheaval? We’ll find out when Inhorgenta 2016 closes its gates on the evening of February 15th.

Here are some examples of new artworks that will be exhibited in Munich. You can find additional new items e here. (Cover photo: jewelry by Oliver Schmidt for women such as the graphic artists Lara und Daniela. Photo: Laurens Grigoleit for Art Aurea)

Rings from the Fold collection. 750 gold

“Five years after I presented my fold collection I made this new ring – as an allusion to my first works. It consists
of a single strip of gold, which crosses and folds. Each piece starts with an act of craftsmanship after which the material determines the final shape.” Leen Heyne

Loop rings. 750 gold, white brilliants

The Loop rings look as if they had captured motion at a given moment in time. Delicately yet firmly connected with each other, the fine golden bands elegantly embrace the wearer’s finger. As if trying to outshine the gold’s gleam, the sparkle of pavé-set diamonds makes for a veritable feast for the eye.
