A meeting point for aficionados of art jewelry is Schmuck, which – as a central happening in the international jewelry scene – has been taking place for 50 years .

Schmuck Special Show

Jewelry doesn’t always need to be appealing, it may also confuse, provoke and unsettle us, says Peter Skubic. This pioneer of contemporary art jewelry was the curator for this year’s special Jewelry show at Munich’s Crafts & Design exhibition. From a total of 700 applications, he selected 66 artists from 21 different countries. The Herbert Hofmann Prizes, awarded on the trade fair Saturday to the show’s winners as selected by a jury, are the year’s high point for the contemporary jewelry scene, explains Wolfgang Lösche, Head of Exhibitions at the Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria. Honored with a retrospective, the Classic of Modernism in 2016 is Peter Chang from Scotland, who has become famous for his highly expres- sive plastic jewelry. “Thanks to the international comparison between and juxtaposition of well-established, famous and young up-and-coming goldsmiths and jewelry artists, this special show has enjoyed a unique status for more than 50 years now,” comments Lösche. Its importance, he adds, is underlined by over 80 jewelry exhibitions held during the trade fair week at galleries, ateliers and museums all over Munich.
