This year’s Grassimesse, which takes place from Oct. 21 to Oct. 23, 2022, focuses on jewelry and ceramics, as well as textiles, glass, furniture, metal and paper. Approximately a quarter of the exhibitors are newcomers.

á la française…” is the title of the special show that Schnuppe von Gwinner and her agency craft2eu have put together. In what might be seen as a typically French manner, these French artisans present impressive works celebrating the artificial and the virtuosic. In addition, three universities are showing current semester projects ranging from ideas for high-end catering accessories, through creative toys, to the ancient culture of bread baking with all its paraphernalia.

The historical roots of the Grassimesse date back to 1920. Then as now, decisive criteria for the jury’s selection are artistic quality in design and realization, independence, and willingness to experiment.
German University Projects
Students from the Play and Learning Design class at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle present new variants for anchor stones. Inspired by high-carat gastronomy, students in the university’s Ceramic and Glass Design class aim to set new standards in fine dining and also invent modern forms for the old theme of food storage. Finally, students from the Jewelry class showcase new pieces of jewelry and focus on how these artifacts are perceived.

“Meet Your Universe” shows the results of a project by students from the Department of Metal Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim. Bread is the focus for students at Applied Arts Schneeberg, West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau: from the oven to hip bread accessories, these young people pursue a contemporary approach to the ancient cultural technique of baking bread. Tempting aromas and tasty bread are included!
Between Antiquity and Historicism
Regulations aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus were in force during the past two years, so new spatial presentation ideas were needed. A number of stands were placed in the permanent exhibition “Antiquity to Historicism.” The relocation proved so successful that it will be continued in 2022, once again resulting in charming combinations and dialogues between tradition and the present day.

Five Grassi Prizes
The Grassimesse’s jury awards five Grassi prizes worth a total of €8,500 for outstanding works and concepts. The first four prizes are the Carl and Anneliese Goerdeler Foundation Prize, the Grassipreis of the Sparkasse Leipzig, the Apolline Prize of the Lyscov-Saucier family from Brussels, and the Grassi Prize of the Friends of the GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst e.V. The fifth prize is new: starting in 2022, Rosemarie Willems from Rotterdam will sponsor a €1,500 prize in memory of her father. This award is primarily intended to promote designers who work with wood. Last but not least, the GRASSI Young Designers Award is presented annually for the best final project in the design department at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and includes a purchase by a museum.
