Jewelry inspires – not only the participants of the 126 Gold & Silver fair 2016 in Schwäbisch Gmünd, of whose works you get a preview in this Showroom advertorial. Also the acclaimed German poet Rainer Maria Rilke dedicated a poem to the topic respectively to the figure of the goldsmith.
The Goldsmith (translated from German)
Wait! Slow down! my growl to every ring
and call to stop the chains. Out there, later,
comes what is to come. Over and over,
Thing, I repeat, Thing and Thing, and Thing, and Thing!:
cry of the working smith. Before him, nothing
has about it what it might become,
or its destiny for shouldering.
God’s own grace creates us equal here:
me, the gold, the fire, the precious stone.
Ruby–calm, keep calm. Stop calling out!
Pain is in this pearl, and water-deeps
flow full inside the aquamarine.
Making contact with you in your sleep
terrifies me. For you start awake!
Is azure lightning what you seek? or bleeding?
Monstrous sparks dazzle from the heap.
Only gold seems to be compliant,
mastered in the fire. But I must bend
and tease it to its purpose round the stone.
All of a sudden, as it makes to clasp it,
the Thing-of-prey strikes in pure metallic
hatred, and sinks its claws into my hand.
