23rd Diessen Pottery Market

For the first time, there is a special award for Young Talents – application deadline until April 7, 2025.

This year, the Diessener Töpfermarkt [Diessen Pottery Market] is honoring young ceramists and their work for the first time. The “Young Ceramics Award”, which is endowed with 2,500 euros, is sponsored by the ceramics supplies company Wolbring from Anzing near Munich and is aimed at up-and-coming ceramists up to the age of 35. The applicants’ workpieces will be presented on the market days in the Diessen cultural forum “Blaues Haus”. Ceramists can still apply for this award until April 7, 2025. “My hope is that this new award will open people’s eyes to what is developing in ceramics. The Diessen pottery market, with its strong international appeal, is a suitable platform for communicating this to the scene and the public,” explains long-time market manager Wolfgang Lösche.

The competition participants are selected by a jury. Only professional ceramists will be juried. Participants of the Diessen pottery market can apply, but free applications from Germany and abroad are also possible. The prize is aimed at the ceramic categories of vessel, object and ceramic sculpture.

International Ceramics Festival by the Lake

From May 29 to June 1, 2025, around 160 ceramists from twelve countries will be taking part in the Diessen pottery market directly on the Upper Bavarian Ammersee with a view of the world-famous Andechs Monastery. The four-day ceramics festival is one of the largest ceramics markets in Europe and will also have “Ceramics by the Lake” as its theme in 2025. “After 25 years of successfully presenting the market in the middle of the lake, this has become a guiding concept. Many workshops have adapted to this theme and produce new works year after year. Ceramics by the lake will therefore continue to be the general theme of the Diessen pottery market in the future,” emphasizes Wolfgang Lösche.

The range of international ceramic diversity on display at this year’s Diessen pottery market extends from utility ceramics for the home and garden to grandiose and abstract works of art. The ceramics festival is regarded as one of the most important industry gatherings in the contemporary ceramic’s scene. In addition to “Ceramics on the Lake” in the lakeside gardens, the highly esteemed Diessen Ceramics Prize and the Ceramics Trail with exhibitions in the “Blaues Haus” cultural forum, the Traidtcasten and the Taubenturm are also on the agenda.

Bowls and mugs

This year, “Bowls and Mugs” will be on display in Erwin Kloker’s central exhibition pavilion in the middle of the market. “Following the great success of previous years, the central pavilion will once again present itself as a stage for individual, handcrafted ceramics, the use of which is right on trend. Even upmarket restaurants like to adorn themselves with individual tableware,” explains Wolfgang Lösche.

Diessen Ceramics Prize – applications until April 28, 2025

The theme of this year’s Diessen Ceramics Award, which is sponsored by the Rohde company every year and held in the historic Traidtcasten next to the Diessen church center with the famous Marienmünster, is “play of colors”. Ceramic surfaces live from the play of colors that is reflected and becomes visible on the exhibits. The flames and ashes of the wood-fired kiln, smoke firing, glazing and painting, crystal glazes, salts, lustres and oxides on earthenware, stoneware or porcelain give ceramics their typical color effect,” emphasizes Wolfgang Lösche.

This year’s theme is to be understood as a fundamental task of design. In addition to the series, free artistic works can also be seen under this aspect. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros. Applications for the Diessen Ceramics Prize must be submitted to the market town of Dießen by April 28, 2025. A jury will decide who will be invited to the competition and the exhibition of the competition works during the pottery market. The award ceremony traditionally takes place in the Traidtcasten, this year on May 29.
