Eric Mertens
“The more you leave out, the more important is what remains,” is Eric Mertens’ credo. If an object does not have any superfluous embellishments, its constituent aspects are its form, proportions, material and design, he explains. This cabinetmaker from Amsterdam skillfully combines minimalist design ideas with his love of the passion and skill of traditional craftsmanship. Using various CAD programs during the design process, the building eventually comes down to skilled woodworking. Finely hand finished surfaces are characteristic of his work and this simplicity emphasizes the decorative grain of the wood.
